3 easy ways to kickstart your decluttering

Have you got too much stuff? Do you want to free up some much-needed space and create a sense of calm, but have trouble getting started?

You’re not alone. The thought of sorting through all your junk can be pretty overwhelming. It’s hard to decide where to begin and it’s easy to put it off.

To help get you started, here are three easy ways to overcome common barriers to decluttering.

  1. At a loss about where to begin? Just do 10 things.

Any 10 things, it doesn’t matter what they are. The important thing is to begin. If you have no clue where to start “Let go of these 10 items to jump-start your decluttering” is a useful list. Start at 1, work down to 10, and you’re on your way.

  1. Lacking motivation? Make a game of it.

Challenge a friend (or someone online) and let the fun begin. I used the Minimalism Game  to declutter thousands of items from my home. Starting on the 1stof the month you get rid of 1 item, 2ndof the month you get rid of 2 items, and so on, building momentum through the month. If you’re a bit daunted, I made Playing the Minimalism Game: A guide to success for you – it contains what I wish I knew before I played the Minimalism Game for the first time.

  1. Don’t like doing anything by halves? Use some magic.

Declutter your home, top-to-bottom, once and for all using the KonMari the method. Marie Kondo’s book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up provides a road-map to systematically declutter your home. While I read the book over three years ago, many of her principles stuck.

Whatever method you choose, just get started.

What’s your biggest barrier to decluttering?
